Sourdough Fire District Update
Dear Residents,
On Friday, July 8th, at the direction of your board of trustees, Sourdough Fire Department submitted a grant application to the Department of Homeland Security for funds to build a much needed fire station on South 3rd. This federal office is empowered to grant a total of $210 million dollars through a special Assistance to Firefighters Fire Station Construction Grant to fire departments across the U.S. to remodel or build new fire stations. There are more than 30,000 fire departments throughout the U.S., many located in economically stressed areas. It’s expected that thousands of those fire departments will submit applications, making our chance of receiving any funds challenging. However, we just couldn’t let the opportunity pass without giving it a try.
We asked for $1,497,890 and agreed that we’d ask residents of Sourdough Fire District to match those funds in a mill levy election IF we receive the grant. We won’t know until September of 2010 whether or not we’ve received the funding, but we’ll continue to keep you updated as we receive information. Meanwhile, we’ll continue to patch and “make do” with our current station.
Many residents in Sourdough Fire District worked with our staff to gather information and provide assistance to make submission of this grant possible. We had less than a month from the time the grant process was opened until the time it was due in the office of Homeland Security. We’re very grateful for their efforts and are happy to report we’ve submitted a complete and very professional grant request.
On another note, despite all the rain and the beautiful green we see now, please remember to be safe with fire. Green does burn as numerous small wildland fires in the last month attest. Sourdough volunteer firefighters train every Tuesday night to be prepared to care for our residents in all types of emergencies. If you have an emergency of any kind, please call 911 for their assistance.
Sincerely,
Randy Larimer, Chairman
Sourdough Fire District Board of Trustees
